You and the ACCU
If you program in any language used by the Open Source movement, then the
ACCU is for you!
The ACCU has about 1,000 members worldwide. Historically, the ACCU’s technical focus has been on C and C++. These languages are also the main languages used by the Open Source movement. Thus, there is a natural synergy between the two. However, with the growing importance of other languages, the ACCU is broadening its focus to include Java, XML, Perl, and Python.
Silicon Valley Meetings
The Silicon Valley chapter of the ACCU holds meetings every second Tuesday evening of the month. See the calendar of events for more details.
What you can expect
The Silicon Valley chapter also publishes a newsletter, called ACCent. It is short and to the point in all things. Two major areas are covered: technical issues and issues related to working in Silicon Valley.
Technically, we carry:
· Articles on programming.
· Programming factoids.
· Information and experience on tools to do a better job.
On working here in the Valley, we report on:
· What’s Hot and What’s Not
· Job trends
· Salary and compensation information
· Rumors and tidbits
We try to keep things light and entertaining because nerds are fun guys ;-).

ACCU
The organization for Professional C/C++/Java Users – from Novice to Expert
The
ACCU is a worldwide association of people with an interest in programming
languages. Its members include people just starting out as well as professional
programmers and companies writing software. A volunteer committee runs
the ACCU. On behalf of the membership, it maintains a web site, prints
several journals six times a year, and organizes both a spring and autumn
conference.
Membership
benefits
The
main ACCU journal is C Vu which typically contains
32 pages of
articles, letters and the world renowned book reviews, all produced
by members.
A
second journal Overload, produced
along with C Vu, is available for more advanced programmers. It concentrates on such
issues as class structure, object oriented design, etc.
The
web site (www.accu.org) gives access to
discussion groups covering various
topics together with code from the journals, book reviews, back
issues, and an event calendar.
A
handbook containing membership details is sent out once a year in
December.
The
four-day spring conference is in April together with the Annual
General Meeting (AGM). This conference gives you an opportunity to hear world class speakers from the fields of C,
C++, Python and Java. Members can attend these conferences at reduced rates.
Types of
Membership
There
are two types of membership:
-
Advanced
membership gives all the above benefits.
-
Regular
membership gives all the above benefits with the exception of the
bi-monthly issues of the Overload
magazine.
A
full-time student qualifies for a discount on both types of
membership.
Standardization
Activities
The
ACCU helps to fund UK Standards work through the International
Standards Development Fund (ISDF). This
goes to assist UK technical experts attending standards working
group meetings. ACCU members who contribute can ask to be provided with access to ISO C and C++ standardization
documents. (In other words, North American members who
contribute to the standardization effort can access the ISO/ANSI
standard working documents through the U.K. site.)
Term of Membership
Our
fixed membership year runs from September 1st to August 31st.
Applications up to June 30th are deemed to be for the full current
membership year, so you will receive all back issues to September
1st.
Applications
received from 1st July are deemed to be for the following membership year.
From March to June you may extend your membership duration at a special
discounted rate.
